Quick Quip of the day

So, today I was installing breakers in an electric panel in a house. We label all of the wires that come in so we know which wire goes to which circuit. The one for the living room in this particular house we abbreviated as "LIV" on the little tab. Well, as I was landing the wire on the breaker, the little tab fell off. So I was looking for it, and my helper asked what I was looking for. "I dropped the tab that says LIV." I then quickly responded,"or maybe it says 54 in Roman Numerals..."

RPG

So, yesterday we played our RPG. It's been a while due to the holidays, so it was fun to all get together again and play. My character is a Falleen scoundrel. Well, our setting this time was a Sabaac tournament on Cloud City. I took Gambler as a Talent to give me a boost on my gambling checks. And trust me, I need it, because I habitually roll really poorly and everyone knows it. It's kind of a running joke amongst us. I originally didn't want to take Gambler, because I knew that I roll like crap, so gambling wasn't a good idea for me. Well, we were entering me in the tournament because I am a scoundrel, and thus I could gamble, and get boosted by the Talent. So, there were 3 rounds of this tournament, if I roll like crap (which is what we completely expected to happen), I lose. First round I rolled a 20!! (using a d20). Second round I rolled 16!!, and third round I rolled a 19!!! So I could have won the tournament out right, but my character is trying to clear his name, so if he threw the tourney, I could take a step closer to clearing my name, so I did that instead of winning it. I'm just amazed that while gambling I rolled a 20, 16, and 19, plus with the Gambler boost I really did well. (turned out that I actually didn't need it, but I have it in case we have to gamble again...:)

More like my Dad...

The good:
LEGO just came out with new sets, 2 of which are Hoth Rebels and Hoth Imperials. Luckily, those are the 2 lowest priced ones, which I currently own...:)

The bad:
LEGO just came out with new sets...and spending money on them, which is what I dearly want to do, isn't necessarily in the financial best interests, with getting a new house and Christmas tapping the funds. We have had to cut down on extra spending due to needing to have money for a house (down payment, closing costs, moving expenses, etc.) We've been real good about saving up, but life gets in the way (car fixes, new glasses, dental visits, etc.)

The ugly:
(Here's where the title comes into play). I had possibly one of my worst weekends ever. So, for the past few weeks my tooth has been hurting. Apparently it was cracked. I found this out Saturday morning when I was eating a pop tart and half of my tooth came out. So Dajuan called around and got an emergency dental place. After work we went in, and I spent 3 LONG hours getting a temporary crown put on. The dentists were nice and all, but 3 hours of keeping my mouth open for long periods of time sucked ass. (insert your own joke here) My lips and jaw were twitching from being tired and being stretched so much for so long. So, I've had to re-think what I eat, how I eat, etc. I get the permanent crown put on after our StL trip, so in about 2 1/2 weeks. That one will at least be easy, as dental visits go. They're supposed to just take off the temp crown and put the new one on.

Updates

The good:

Dajuan and I are having a home built by a builder that I have worked with for over 6 years. The process of building a new home is coming along. Right now we are cleaning and cleaning out in preparation for selling our townhouse. Very soon (hopefully) the builder will be able to start on the new one. The equuity I have built up in this one will allow us to pay realtor's fees and hopefully part of a downpayment on the new one.

Also C5 has been officially announced. Dajuan was very skeptical about going, but I would like to try to make the finances work (see above) so we can go to it. I really want to see many of our friends who will be going.

The bad:

We live in a very safe townhome complex. I normally leave my truck, and many times the house, unlocked. Two nights ago someone got into it and rummaged through it. They must have been on a mission because it was a windy 30 degrees out! They took my Oakleys, and I think they took my starter checks from one of my banks, although I may have taken them out myself a while ago. I don't remember. Either way I went to the bank so they wouldn't post any checks from that account (it's the account I use to pay my mortgage with, so I never write checks from it anyway.) I think it was some local kid, because my credit cards were still there (although somewhat hidden.) Dajuan and I now have to lock up for the remainder of the time that we are here, which is sad.

The ugly:

Well, more like me being ugly...my glasses broke today. I've had them for a few years I think. target couldn't fix them, and they no longer carry that style, so I'm SOL with those. I am wearing my old pair for now. Dajuan set me up an eye appointment for next Tuesday, so I'll get new ones then.

Dominion

Today we played a combination that I came up with that I like to call "Trump cards."

Adventurer, Baron, Bridge, Coppersmith, Council Room, Courtyard, Envoy, Festival, Mine, Village

The idea of this combo is to get lots of money quickly so you can get lots of land. Hence, Trump cards. :) Every action card was bought and played, so I don't think I'd take any of them out. Possibly Adventurer for Library. We both had tons of money in our hands. It was a fairly quick game as well. It had good balance between extra actions, extra buys, extra coins, etc. I liked it. :)

Dominion and Dominion:Intrigue

If you don't own this game, either buy it or find someone who has it. It is way too much fun, and very addictive. :) Dajuan and I have played many of the suggested combinations. Here are some that we have come up with:

"A little less talk and a lot more action": Cellar, Conspirator, Festival, Great Hall, Market, Noble, Pawn, Shanty Town, Throne Room, and Village.

The idea of this one was to have all action cards that grant extra actions. Once I played like 15 cards and had 19 coins to buy with. Unfortunately, I only had 2 buys, which is one of the downfalls of this combination. Market and Great Hall are faves for us. We didn't buy Shanty Town or Village much at all (with Great Hall and Silver costing the same), so next time we would take those out for Coppersmith and Bridge. We had a problem with having way too many coppers in our hands (and Coppersmith is AWESOME, especially at the beginning of the game.)

"Our Chamber of Secrets": Great Hall, Market (see what I mean?), Mining Village, Minion, Moat, Secret Chamber, Spy, Swindler, Thief, Workshop.

The idea of this one was to counter the attack cards with Secret Chambers, which proved very effective. It was quite fun. Again, though, we need to stop playing Great Hall and Market in every game. You may not need both Moat and Secret Chamber, so it's up to you if you want them both or not.

Dajuan and I have now played every action card at least once, except for the Black Market cards, which are coming in the mail from boardgamegeek.com this week sometime. Can't wait for those. :)

End of an Era

Our first Gencon was in 2008. Dajuan and I pretty much lived in the SW minis area. We made lots of friends, met tons of people from the boards, and had loads of fun. The time between Gencon 08 and GC 09 was turbulent, to say the least. WotC focused the game to be more competitive, issuing game-breaking commander effects on cheap (squad-building wise) pieces. As the competitiveness escalated, the fun aspects of the game declined drastically. The "win at all costs" jerks became more prominent than they were before, and they made the game not fun at all. Well, at GC 09, Dajuan and I didn't even go to the minis area on Thursday, the first day. We were missed, as some of the good crowd sought us out. We made a few scant appearances there Friday and Saturday, mostly just to say hi to the people we wanted to see. We didn't play 1 single game there this year.
And now, the biggest jerk player in swm has written a large "Here's how we need to change the game to fit my style and make me happy" thread, and I just can't find the desire to call him on being a jerk. SWM is becoming too competitive, and we just don't want to have any part of it. So we'll continue to play our fun games in Des Moines. We'll do some fun stuff in Omaha later next month, but for the most part, we're done with competitive minis. The squads just are all the same and boring as hell to play and play against.
Don't get me wrong, at this year's GC we had such a blast hanging out with the CJ crew. It was more fun than we've had at a con in a long time, and past cons have been fun.
I guess I'm just sad about closing another chapter of my life, but to be balanced, I am happy about opening up the new one, too.

Letter

To the Office of the Chief of State of the Galactic Alliance, Natasi Daala:

Greetings. I am Darie Doard, CEO of the "On a Limb Prosthetics" Company. Perhaps in your recent official interventions regarding the Jedi Order, you've failed to realize the effects on small businesses like mine. The Company has been in my family for generations. Throughout the years the Jedi have been our primary source of business. They have not only been causes, but they have also been recipients of our state-of-the-art technological services. And we have always been there to lend a hand (or mend a hand as the case may be.) With the Jedi being held back by your official observers, their humanitarian actions have decreased dramatically. This hurts businesses like mine who thrive on the Jedi doing their jobs unabashedly, or shall I say, without their proverbial "hands tied." We suffered through the lean years of the Galactic Empire, and we were just getting back on our feet with the recent Vong and Correlian wars. Please reconsider the effects of your restrictions upon them to your loyal citizens like my family.

Sincerely,
Darie Doard,
CEO of On a Limb Prosthetics, we come in handy when you need us.

Well, Mother Nature has foiled our weekend plans. We were going to go to Chicago for my annual Blackhawks game (every season since 92-93). Last night Eastern Iowa was hit with freezing rain, so when we got about 40 miles east of Des Moines, traffic was damn near stopped. It took about an hour to get 5 miles, at which point we turned around and came home. We had a hotel reservation, tix to the game and everything. It was also snowing in chicago, so our friends that we were supposed to meet there said not to even come in.

An open letter to Mandalorian Fanboys

Do Mandalorians serve as role models for your behavior?

Can you identify with certain Mandalorian characters?

When you identify with them, does that bring you to a higher state of awareness (clarity of thought, etc)

Do you know the words to Mandalorian chants and songs, and can you recite them with other people in Mandalorian?

Does reading stories about Mandalorians make you want to build your own armor?

Have you built or bought your own armor?

Do you have a Mandalorian tattoo?

Congratulations!! You are part of a cult!!

"Hope" for schools

http://wnd.com/index.php?fa=PAGE.view&pageId=77253

This radical was warned not to post this on the net. He did anyway. Mussolini would be proud.

I'm glad the superintendent came down on him legally. Maybe there is some hope for our schools after all.

3D terrain

I've just taken my first step into a larger world. I started making the Hirst Arts plaster molds for having 3D terrain for minis. The molds actually turned out well, i think. It will take a lot of time, but I think it will be fun.

www.hirstarts.com

I started with mold #301, and did 270, 271, and 273 afterwards. I also have a couple of the pipe molds (320, I think) that I will work on later after I get the hang of it.

sigh

I clicked on the "News and Politics" button in the upper right corner and clicked on the first link that came up. It was an Obama lover. I read her post and responded to try and make her more informed of the facts about him.

Her response called me a stalker.

Her best friend's first words called me a fascist. How utterly typical of liberals, especially the extreme radical liberals who support Obama. They just can't accept a differing opinion.

Oh, and I've been blocked by said poster, so I can't even respond to her or her friend's accusations about me. Again, how typical to cry about the first amendment except when it comes to other opinions, which should be silenced. Try looking up the definition of Fascism and see what it says about "differing opinions."

Silly hypocrites.

Sarah Palin

Totally threw me for a loop. I've seen her interviewed on Glenn Beck, and I kinda like her. She's for drilling in ANWAR and stands up to good ole boy politicians. I think she's a great pick for McCain, and might actually win him the presidency. I don't think she'll be enough for me to overlook McCain's shortcomings, though. I still think Bob Barr would be the best President, of the choices we have now. I just wish the media would give him a chance.

Oh, and I absolutely LOVE the Dems answer to Pailn,"She doesn't have the experience." HA!!!!! the hypocracy is too priceless...man I was LOL when I heard that.
